MY ART MAKING
why i create
I like to explore the idea of “re-seeing” my surroundings. Taking a step back. Examining. Noting the good and bad. Seeing the core of something, dissecting it from the inside out. And then thinking about why those things are the way they are. And then thinking about how they can change to be more or less clear. And then thinking about my relationship with those things.
My practice of investigative observation strives to pull the curtain back, revealing what is behind the facade of the world I’ve been taught to accept. I create art to express the shift in my thinking, aiming to reveal new truths to myself and others.
Artists like Alberto Magnelli, who combines abstract shapes with human forms, and Edward Ruscha, who combines language and thought-provoking visuals, inspire me to take risks through juxtaposition and combination.
Through oil, acrylic, and sculpture I blend reality with the imaginative, creating realistic works with a dash of dystopia. I transform daily objects into wearable art, often turning the objects’ “purpose” on its head and challenging their capacity. I mean, who would wear Cheez-ITs?
I immortalize daily vignettes through art, from the clouds overhead to the child on the bus looking out the window with the feeling of wonder one only has under the age of ten.
I spend my time looking at mundane daily objects in a new light, honing my relationship with “re-seeing.” I make art to burst the bubble that life is stagnant.
